Neela Ghoshal is the only female vocalist in her family to learn classical Indian music. Her father, Zahoor Ahmad Maqbool Ahmed Qawwal, was the first person to bring qawwali to India, and Neela became fascinated with his music at an early age. At age 18 she joined her brother's group, Jumma-e-Takbeer (which translates as Day of Celebration), and soon took over as their lead vocalist. Years later she made her recording debut with Music For Lovers on Universal Music India. Neela also happens to be the wife of composer A R Rahman who directed many critically acclaimed films like Slumdog Millionaire, for which she wrote the score. Zahoor Ahmad Maqbool Ahmed Qawwal is considered the father of qawwali music in Indian subcontinent. He was born in Amroha, in Uttar Pradesh and died in Lucknow in India in 1944 and was granted Pakistan's highest civil award, Hilal-e-Imtiaz. He is buried close to his second love, Sadequa Maqbool Isfahani — his first wife — in Lucknow. He was a scholar of Urdu and Persian literature. In his short life he managed to transform qawwali from a mere tradition into a form of music which highly reflected the social, cultural and political developments that took place during British Raj. Old link neelyrics A R Rahman was born in Chennai, India, to R K S Ramanathan and his wife T. A. Selvi. They had four children – three sons and a daughter – although their first child, a son named after his father, died at the age of two. He has two younger brothers: R K Suresh and R M Suresh who live in Mumbai and California respectively. They are of Tamil heritage by birth but were brought up speaking Hindi and English. His father had his musical roots from the Manglore gharana (a style of Hindustani classical music) while his mother had her musical background from the Carnatic music tradition. A. R. Rahman started learning Carnatic classical music at the age of four and started playing the keyboard at the age of eight. He completed his schooling in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Rahman's father, R K S Ramanathan, was a film-score composer and conductor for Tamil and Malayalam films, and Rahman started learning Western classical music from him at a young age and played piano, guitar and violin. He also learned to play the flute by age 12 and later enrolled in London's Royal College of Music in 1986 to learn orchestration . While he was there, Rahman was offered a job with "Sagar Enterprises", one of Mumbai's largest ad agencies . After he finished his tenure with Sagar, Rahman joined "JWT" (now J. Walter Thompson), an advertising agency based in London, working there for four years. Rahman first scored music in 1987 for a Tamil film produced by his father titled "Ganamurthy" in which he also made his debut as an actor. For this film, Rahman received the Best Music Director Award, given by the Tamil Nadu State. His first Hindi film score was "Kabhi Na Kabhi" in 1990.
